Solar Energy in Japan
Solar Energy in Japan has become pretty popular over the last couple of years mainly because of the huge earthquake that we had a few years ago that caused the tsunami and crippled one Nuclear power plant.

Japanese Culture - Bean Throwing Festival
Japanese Culture - Bean Throwing Festival - 節分日本
Setsubun (節分, Bean-Throwing Festival or Bean-Throwing Ceremony) is the day before the beginning of Spring in Japan. The name literally means "seasonal division", but usually the term refers to the Spring Setsubun, properly called Risshun (立春) celebrated yearly on February 3 as part of the Spring Festival (春祭 haru matsuri). In its association with the Lunar New Year, Spring Setsubun can be and was previously thought of as a sort of New Year's Eve, and so was accompanied by a special ritual to cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the year to come. This special ritual is called mamemaki (豆撒き) (literally "bean throwing"). Wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setsubun

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijIlgiaYAkI
Fukuroi Fireworks - 袋井遠州花火
Every year in Japan, during the hot, humid summer months, people gather in various outdoor locations to enjoy fireworks. The shows are often impressive, with hundreds to thousands of fireworks of varying sizes, colors and designs. One larger and famous fireworks festivals in Japan happens every year in Fukuroi city, Shizuoka Prefecture. They put on quite the show, and is certainly worth viewing with the thousands of blasts they shoot off that night.

鯉のぼり - Koinobori - Carp Streamer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz2EnpBQvSI
Koinobori (鯉幟), meaning "carp streamer" in Japanese, are carp-shaped wind socks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no Sekku (端午の節句), a traditional calendrical event which is now designated a national holiday; Children's Day. These wind socks are made by drawing carp patterns on paper, cloth or other nonwoven fabric. They are then allowed to flutter in the wind. They are also known as satsuki-nobori (皐幟).
Children's Day takes place on May 5. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May, in honor of sons and in the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong.

Taiyaki - たい焼き & Takoyaki - たこ焼き - Life in Japan
Taiyaki - たい焼き is a Japanese fish-shaped cake. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Other common fillings may be custard, chocolate, or cheese.
Takoyaki - たこ焼きis a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special takoyaki pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion. Takoyaki are brushed with takoyaki sauce, a sauce similar to Worcestershire sauce, and mayonnaise. The takoyaki is then sprinkled with green laver (aonori) and shavings of dried bonito (katsuobushi).

This is a video of 2 Tsunami evacuation towers in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka Prefecture.
The towers were built after the Tsunami that hit the Northern part of Japan. They are over 10 meters high so that they can withstand a 10 meter high Tsunami that the Pacific Ocean side of Japan from Tokyo to Nagoya is expecting over the next few years.

The Rugby 7's is coming back to Tokyo
Well this is great news for rugby and Japan. It has been awhile since I have been to see 7's rugby and so when they announced that it would be coming back to Japan I was over the moon. I watch every tournament on the Telly, ie computer here in Japan so to have the chance to go and see some of my heroes of 7's rugby is a chance one can't miss.
If anyone is interested in the Tokyo 7's rugby tournament then check out the official homepage.

Minami Minegishi Apologizes for Boyfriend 峯岸みなみからのメッセージ - News from Japan
This is over a week old now but still interesting. The news about this young girl (20) from the popular girls group, AKB48 and what she has done has been all over the news in Japan and she even made an apology video on YouTube which got millions of views from all around the world. Well now people are discussing whether this is crazy gender equality or just drama to sell more records. I am not one for drama but it is interesting to read different peoples' reactions from both here in Japan and overseas.
From The Japan Times
AKB48 member’s ‘penance’ shows flaws in idol culture.

The image of a young girl in front of a camera, her head recently shaved, sobbing into the lens is one that’s guaranteed to shock. But when that girl is a key member of idol group AKB48, the reaction is bound to be stronger. . . . .
****update. Minami Minegishi’s apology video on YouTube has been made private reportedly due to requests from her fans.
Also here is a well known YouTuber living in Japan with his views on it and Japan culture.

Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker (Kai) Saves the Day
I thought this was a joke when I first saw it and also thought it was quite old but it turns out that it just happen recently.
Quote from the source
When a guy claiming he's Jesus tries to kill a PG&E worker because he's black, then begins beating up a woman that was trying to help, it takes hitchhiker, Kai, and his hatchet, to put a stop to the psycho. Here's Jessob Reisbeck & Terry Woods' story that 1st aired on KMPH FOX 26 in Fresno, CA, Friday, February 1st.
Here is a link to Kai's amazing raw interview:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckfBGd...

Well the weekend has gone. It was a good one. Went to Numazu to see some ALTs that are leaving JET and who have helped me a lot with JET projects.
Saturday had a Takoyaki/ yakiniku party at my place. My wife bought a new hotplate and wanted to break it in. It went well. In the evening I watched the All Blacks V South Africa. We won but it was a very tight game and could have gone either way at the start but the ABs started to look much stronger in the second half and did let the Boks come back at them.
Sunday played cricket. Got 67 or something runs. Should've got a hundred but was given out LBW for the 3rd time this year. god cant anyone get it right. like the other 2 i could see where i was standing and where the ball came from and was going to and there is no way that i should've been given out. but once the umpire gives you out you are out. It was really easy too and thougth i could've got a really big score that day. Bowled like shit but i was tired from batting in 29degrees for 2 hours. Plus i hadn't bowled in over a month so i guess i can't complain. go one wicket though.
now today i am sore all over and this is one of the main reasons why i can't really be bothered to play anymore.

Classic All Blacks vs Japan
Well last weekend Ayako and I went to Tokyo to watch the big game with Sasha and Sachiko. It was great to see see some of my rugby heroes play in Japan as it doesn't happen very often. Once in 10 or so years. the score was 36-6 (if i remember right) to the classic All Blacks. Japan did very well but we must remind ourselves that this was the 'Classic' All Blacks and not the All Blacks and the last time Japan played the All blacks in a rugby game the score was 145-19 (a world record at the time). So you can see there is a difference between the two sides.
Anyway, after the game Ayako, Sasha, Sachiko and I went out drinking in Roppongi and watch the Super 14 semi final between the Crusaders and the Bulls. We lost which was very sad but the cool thing was that we watched it with the classic All Blacks. So we were able to have a chat and a beer with some of the greats of world rugby like Merts, Spencer, JK and John Hart. Ayako was able to get a few photos with some of them and we all had a great time apart from the Crusaders losing.

Not so interesting weekend.
Well start the weekend off with a night out at karaoke with some friends.
Saturday just relaxed around the house watching TV and doing Internet stuff. In the evening I went out with Ayako and her family and her mother's brother's family for a family dinner. More like a house warming for a her cousin who has just moved into his own apartment but it wasn't at his apartment, so i don't know if you can really can call it a house warming?! After that went back home to watch the rugby. Crusaders vs The force (perth, aust) and what and arse kicking that was. 53-0. The crusaders are looking good at the moment and are slowing picking there game up. Good to see.
Sunday, had a game of cricket in shizuoka against the Paddy Foleys from Tokyo. Always good fun but this time it didnt seem like fun. It feels our team is just in the game to win and it is making things hard for everyone. Lots of people arguing and shit like that.
Sunday night I was all alone as Ayako went to Tokyo with her parents to see her sister's new apartment.

Kytes C.C vs Indian Engineers C.C
well my season isn't getting off to the start i was hoping for and at the moment i am unsure where to start to get it right as we don't have time to practice so the game is the only time to try anything and if you go out cheaply then that is it. lets hope i can sort out my batting woes in the next game.
anyway the kytes lost another warm-up game, this time to the Indian Engineers. it was a good game but our bowling let us down, but it didn't help that we were one short in the field.

18th Kytes vs Wombats
Well we had a our first game of the cricket season and what a cold one it was. we started off with a lost. It wasn'tt that bad but it was against our close rivals the wombats.
The game started with the wombats smashing us all around the park for 296 for 4 or so.
Then we went into bat and were very lucky to make it to 151 all out. if it wasn't for some players finally getting some runs then our total might have been very low, i mean very very low, i mean like under 100 runs low.

The Crusaders VS The Sharks
This weeks big game is between the Crusaders and the Sharks. The Crusaders have just come off the back of a big win (48-29 vs the Cheetahs(South Africa) and will be looking to stake their claim for this years Super 14 Title and to make it a 2 wins 1 lost on their South African tour. They are up against the Sharks (South Africa) who have had a week off as they had a bye and a 3 wins from 3 games.
VS
I think the Crusaders will come away with the win but only just.
Go the Crusaders
* The Crusaders lost the game in the last minute 26-27.
Overall: Crusaders 9 wins, Sharks 2 wins, 1 draw
At Sharks home venues: Crusaders 3 wins, Sharks 2 wins

Shizuoka Kytes first practice of the year.
Well it was a coldish but sunny day in Shizuoka city. All the boys that said they would be there at 11am to help with some work on the ground were nowhere to be seen, but this is very typical of kytes players.
Anyway, when everyone finally turned up we were able to have a nice relaxing practice. Of course everyone was rusty from a long winter break but that was to be expected.
After the practice we moved to the warmer kytes club house and got down to business, well after the beers had came. After a lot of talking, alot of yes, no's, and that sounds good but.... we finally finished and were on our way homes.
It was a good day and lets just hope that our season goes the same.
photos to come.......

WOW what a concert that was. Myself, Matt S, Kat and Joel drove to Yokohama and then trained to Saitama to watch U2. It was my first time to be inside the stadium but my second time to see. The first time was way back in NZ at Lancaster Park, where i was helping the cricket club sell hotdogs and stuff outside the stadium. It was good to finally see them in person.
MT Fuji - 3776m
Mt fuji looking good with some snow on top and the usual cloud hanging around. On my way to saitama to see U2.

Cricket - NZ v OZ
well the game started off great as nz restricted oz to 240/9 which was pretty good and had some of my australian friends thinking that nz would win.
but then came the nz batting and down down down we went. 35/6 wow it was over before it started and if it wasnt for our long tail then maybe we would have been bowled out for less than 50. well done to the tail, vittori, mills and oram for batting nz into a position to win and bad luck for not quite making it.
my australian friends went from shit we are going to loose this game to, what an arse kicking to, this is going to be a close one.
funny game cricket is.
so now australia go into the final against either south africa or west indies. i think oz will take this one but it will be a great final to watch.

What a week of sport to come?!
hi there everyone. sorry its been a couple of weeks since my last post. i would like to say it was because i was busy but sadly no. it was because i am lazy.
so you must ask yourself why is he posting now then, will that is easy.
sports.......
firstly tonight - New Zealand vs Australia in a semi final game in the ICC champions Trophy.
wow what a game this is going to be. even though NZ hasn't beaten the Australian cricketing machine in a while, i still think we have a chance. why? because we are playing good cricket at the moment and have just beaten both South Africa and Pakistain in previous game in the ICC trophy, and on top of that we have won this tournament before and Australia hasn't. anyway it should be a great game.
secondly this sunday night - the All Blacks vs England in rugby.
Eng has only beaten NZ 7 or 8 times out of 30 or so games in rugby history. NZ is 1st in the world now, Eng is the current world cup holders (which was 3 years ago and since then they have gone one way, down. they are now 6th in the world)
but even though the ABs are No 1 and have only lost like 5 games since the last world cup and England have so many injuries to their top players and that their record since the last world cup is like crap (i think they have only won like 5-10 games out of like 30 games) they still think they can win. this is something that i really hate about the English and i am sure this is why they are one of the greatest nations in the world but that doesn't mean they have the right or the arrogance (maybe some ignorance too) to think that they can beat us.
the only thing stopping us from putting on 50 points (yes 50 points) would be the lack of game play our top players have had over the last several weeks and one of those northern referees trying to control the game like he knows what he is doing. aka NZ v Eng last year.
